Tyre sizes and the MOT

Post by sleepy0905 »

Hi just a quick question if i took the ax for an MOt with 145-70-13 tyres on the front and 155-70-13 on the rear would they fail it on the mot.
its just the AX has low tread on the rear and i have two very good 155 wheels i can put on the back just trying to save a few quid if i can. :)

They have to be the same on each axle but can vary

As Tim says, Sleepy. However I`d be tempted to get them all the same size because if you have a flat you`re either going to need to different spares or run the risk of driving illegally or effecting the handling.
Stinkwheel, didn`t the CX (or some of them) have those weird directional tyres which had tapered tread?

Our ZX came with 175/65x14's as standard - and the spare? - 165 x 14 - calimed as a spacesaver!

Ok till I fitted it to the nearside front and after a couple of days drove the thing to work 5.30 and forgot as I went round a sharp right hand bend and wondered why I nearly ended up in a brick wall!

Sleepy, give me a shout if you`re heading this way in at some point. I`m sure to have four matching good tyres about somewhere.
I`ve definately got four nearly new 155-80-13 (same as 155-13) tyres here if they`ll fit.

The tyres that are on are 145-70-13 and the 2 wheels i got from you are 155-70-13 so i will put the 155 on the rear for the mot then put the 145 back on after it has passed its mot.

I think Citroen did the same for the DS. As the front wheels carry most of the weight and do most of the braking and steering (not to mention all the driving) the front tyres are made to work harder. The rear tyres don't need to be as big as the front tyres or so Citroen reasoned. You can see the same logic applied to powerful rear-wheel-drive cars that wear bigger tyres at the back.

Of course life is much easier if all the tyres are the same...
