Sticky Starter on GTi

Post by Jayboy »

Hi guys

Been away from the forum for a while - lack of money and job means can't spend too much tim on t'internet!

Anyway, I started up my GTi yesterday for the first time in about a year as I'd lost the key - D'Oh! She started straight away but I could hear the starter motor still turning after the key had been released so I turned the ignition off.

I restarted her and the starter was still stuck on. But this time when I turned the ignition off the starter motor kept turning so i had to disconnect the battery!

Any ideas what's caused this and how can i fix it? Does the starter run through a relay which could have failed or is it more likely to be the solenoid on the starter?

The starter motor is nearly new and had only done a few hundred miles before the car was laid up due to the drivers door unexpectedly falling off!

Don't particularly want to go through the hassle of removing the starter again if i don't have to - such a b**** of a job on the GTi!!

Thanks guys

you want to try it ont he 16v!! even less room!
sounds like the starter has got a sticky contact ?? may work with a gently tap to the solonoid on the top of the starter??
as std they dont go through a relay but its a simple common mod to do!
Timmo.

Sounds like the plunger in the solenoid has rusted and is gripping its sleeve.

Best bet would be to remove the starter, clean and lubricate it carefully and do anything you can to prevent further corrosion.

I once had that on my cavalier and it was the ignition switch that had broken.

Ign switches are pretty weak in BX's....

I'd give the solonoid a good thump but it could well be worth unplugging the connectors on the switch and testing them....

Cheers

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...
