mot time

Post by charlie »

usually i don't mind taking my 19 to be looked over, but this year i havn't been able to clear up a couple of things..

first is the heavy steering, its had hdyreflush in for the last two months but with no change. i've had the f d out and stripped, looked at the belt seems tight, pump is a plaides one fitted three years ago. the only thing that i didnt look at was something bx bandit said about the steering ram...

so i'm just about to give to European motors here in cardiff for them to sort out and with the help of a pressure gauge they be able to pinpoint the problem..

the other thing is a problem ive had since i changed the leads and coil..

i forgot the firing sequence so with lots of misfiring and with the help of you guys i got the leads in the right order but it sounded like the downpipe gasket was now blowing. not a problem i thought so i changed the wire mesh anyways this is not sorted and im not even sure that is was a blowing exhaust.

on cold start up sounds rough, blowing sound, then when every thing warms up blowing (??) almost disappears. except when under load when theres an annoying faint chugging sound, almost like a two stroke engine. car runs well and no obvious lack of power...

I don't wish to put you off mate...but I'm trying to put you off! I've not been impressed with the service or attitude of European Motors (Newport rd right?) Maybe you need to go and make up your own mind, their prices aren't bad but they've b£ll sh1tted me and told me they had done stuff when they hadn't. An honest guy is Owen G motors in Bridgend but you'll pay more for him...however I won't use him again because I booked an MOT for 10.30, turned up at 10.25 only to be told that someone had just turned up for an MOT so I had to wait 45 mins before I could be tested. So I didn't wait........

Theres is also Bijou in Newport...

Steering.

Looking at your last post in September on this subject I see that you said there were only droplets coming from the return pipes. I presume that this test was done with the engine running - in which case your problem is likely to be the FDV.

The idea is that the FDV allows a bleed of high pressure LHM to the pinion valve at all times. With the pinion valve relaxed this simply flows through the valve and back to the reservoir. Turn the wheel, the valve operates either left or right and shuts off this flow. This in turn causes a rapid rise in pressure which operates the FDV which then allows high flow to the steering.

If nothing comes out of the return pipe - then its not getting to the pinion valve.

As a further check you could try removing the pipe from the FDV to the steering pinion and seeing what the flow is there - bit messy but should find your fault.

finally got round to checking the flow in the operational return pipe and theres loads being returned...

and tomorrow will check pinion valve end...

can you just clarify that when the wheels are turned the flow in the return pipe will dry up because the fd has sent it to steering....

sooo from the steering how does it get back to the reservoir and can you work out from this rate of return whats wrong with the power steering??

I'd just like to pop in my own views about European Motors. Which is that their attitude was sorely lacking. I just remember being treated as if I knew nothing and then fobbed off with excuses and a really rather brusque attitude, as though I was about as desirable to be speaking to as a dead fly. I shan't be going back there again. I also got charged for an inspection of the rear arms. Nice.

Sounds about right Capri, seems to echo my experiences quite nicely! If you get stuck mate, try Owen G Motors in Bridgend (Coity)..a little expensive (more than European motors) but it's a proper workshop/garage...not the sh1te hole of E.M.. He knows citroens too

Sounds like you need the factory workshop manual.

Its under steering on Bob Smith's site. Loads of other useful stuff there too,

Thanks for that mate, I will bear that in mind! I'm fortunate in that I've kinda got two 'homes' at the moment, one in Ponty where I spend termtime and one in Southampton where I am for holidays. This means I can pick and choose the best specialists from those two areas for whichever car happens to need work! Up till now the only people I knew of up this end of the world were EM, but thanks for your recommendation - I shall investigate further if needs be! :D
