Gearbox drain plug on 17RD

Post by jrdpod »

Is the gearbox drain plug on the 17RD the same size as the sump drain plug?

Thanks
John Podgorski/jrdpod

PS: The stop solenoid was changed with a suitable socket attachment.

I don't think so. The parts book I downloaded shows the sump plug as being 16 x 150 ( which sounds like a metric thread size.) This is for a 16 valve with an ALLOY sump. The gearbox plug is shown as being 14 x 100 and the drain plug on the differential as being another 16 x 150.

Steel sumps may be different - and I'm not even sure if the ZX has the same size sump plug as a BX - they are certainly in different places - and the ZX one has a hexagonal head and the BX a square socket. Hex headed ones are cheaper to buy.

No mate, the plugs are very different.

I'm sure I have some spare ones hanging around should you need one...

The gearbox plug on my TZD has a 21mm spanner head on it plus a square drive.

My sump plug is a square drive only, no flats for a spanner.

My gearbox drain plug IS the same sqaure bit as the engine sump.

The gearbox filler on the end, is a 21mm bolt IIRC. But I always fill it through the breather.

Just a tip; if it's the drain plug, it should point towards the rear of the car and a 21mm socket or 8mm square bar fits.
If a 16mm spanner fits and it's pointing downwards, you're about to release a bolt associated with the lay ahft for reverse gear and if taken out, often leads to a gearbox job if after removel a dull thud is heard inside the gearbox.

I think you'll find the fill/level is 19 but the drain is 21/8mm square.

my drain plug is 32mm, 18mm, and 16mm, but i find it easier to take the drive shaft out than to get the actual drain plug out :D

And you really dont want to even loosen the reverse idler shaft bolt, cos one day you'll put it into reverse, the innards of the bot will fall out of there place and you'll be looking for a new cog box :(

Ah yes, 19mm would make more sense. I never go near it to be honest

But my drain plug on the gearbox is a round headed bolt with an 8mm square slot.
