I would not recommend running a car with an ECU with no battery, it is highly likely that the ECU will be destroyed by the noise spikes from the alternator.

I deal with lead/acid batteries on a daily basis with my job ...
These are the do's and don't voltage wise...
A freshly charged battery in good nick is 12.3V with no load.
A battery that's totally discharged should not be allowed to fall below 10.8V , any lower and the chances of it making a recovery are slim.
13.8 volts is charging nicely thank you and 14.4 volts is top whack. 14.5 volts and the battery starts to gas (this is OK for a short while in a car battery)
