Redex.

Not the internet explorer broken image icon, but redex engine decoke liquid.

Pour a load into your inlet manifold while revving the engine fairly hard. Works wonders. Just make sure you do it on a windy day as the smoke it generates can be rather horrible. (it's the carbon being burned off)

thats ok I just try to use the car less....

A good decoke tip from way back is to take out the spark plugs and pour a few ccs of brake flud down the holes, leave overnight and watch for smoke when you start up
Brake fluid does the same to carbon, gum and varnish that it does to paintwork  besides, you wondered what to do with that old tin when you got an LHM car didnt you?

In days of yore when petrol stations had attendants, they used to offer you "shots" of Redex in the tank. Seem to remember though it was upper cylinder lubricant, don't know if it did anything to keep you clear of "coke". :? :D

I avoid "coke" these days, it makes people so miserable  You can squirt brake fluid into the inlet with the engine running too, an old fairy liquid bottle will do the trick.

Great tip Tim 8) I have not found any redex over here, probably is around just not found it. But if Brake Fluid is as good as Redx and probably better than the "Adman as seen on TV" crap.

Still have attendants in NZ  Most I try to avoid saves me getting the wrong fuell or splashed paint work. Irritates the hell out of me when some lazy Kiwi capable of doing it themselves sits in their car blasting their horn at a busy attendant though. Guess its a cultural thing?
When Leaded fuel was phased out in kiwiland we used to put a shot of some stuff called Valvemaster in the fuel. Thats practice has all but died out now after 11 years of Unleaded fuels. Put to much in clogs up the engine , to little burn the valve seats out

Remember a few people who could not be bothered to put the stuff in that said the car was running perfectly fine until one day it would not go

Incidentally back in 1996 after doing my one year OE in NZ when I came back to the UK, I mentioned that cars run on 95 octance as the max in NZ and every Citreon Mechanic I spoke to said I would be a idiot to put Unleaded in my BX. But it probably explains why there are No BX14 in NZ? Then again I dont recall the last time I heard or saw a BX16 advertised?

cacaolat, from memory of urban driving records I made for my BX16 back in the UK 5.8 miles per Litre was about the same I was getting. Takes a very steady and light foot to achieve the kind of Fuel Efficancy the citreon test lab figures reckon.

REDEX ... aghhh ! You're not going to put that in an engine THAT WORKS are you?

Nasty stuff ..... I wouldn't put anything that acidic anywhere near an alloy motor...

When was the last time you saw a head that was coked up? Modern fuels just don't seem to do this if the motor's running anywhere near right (which it can be argued mine isn't!!)

What it is good for is cleaning up a head after you've got it off the car ... pour a little on and let it sit for a while, then wipe it off... comes up like new. Acutally useful to clean out the pintle caps on injectors... but again remove them first and let them soak.

"Upper cylinder lubricant" ... which bits exactly? The stuff burns off in microseconds, hence the smoke...

.. and what benefits has anyone returned?

... I'd use snake oil myself ;)

I believe that theory related to the upper cylinder itself including the piston rings above the oil scraper. It was more relevant in the days of cast iron bores & blocks to reduce wear & ridging and extend the time before a rebore would become necessary. Burning off in microseconds is not really a problem as it is replenished every induction stroke when added to the fuel tank.

Personally, as a rule, I don't believe in additives especially injector cleaner (which can also gum up the injectors if laid up for a period).

Couple of shockers for you when I find the stories!

In one of the Pacific Islands the NZ police (Peace keeping force) are running cars on Coconut oil.

Some jokers in NZ are running Diesel engines using old vegtable oil from a fish and chip shop. No just think how many cars in th UK could run on the fat from a chippy

Lots of vehicles are running on waste cooking oil in the UK - there are even specialist bus converters.

Arrangements must be made with Customs and Excise to pay the duty - so its not wise to put veg oil in the car in the supermarket car park.

After another tank on the TXS vanishing into thin air, I think I've solved the mystery to my poor fuel performance .....

I've replaced and set up the carb. The gas test is good...
I've set the ignition timing ...

and the thing still drank like a fish ...

... checked the oil and it reeks of petrol again , and is noticably high on the dip stick....

IT'S THE DAMN FUEL PUMP... the seal's shot at the back ....

I still have most of my "lost" fuel ... it's in the sump!

agaggagahhhhhh!
