ABS Relay......Location, location, location...

Post by docchevron »

Anyone have any idea where the ABS relay is situated in the car??

It's a 'M' plate 8V GTi auto, and I have no power on pin 3 and 20 with the ignition on, so it rather points towards the relay, only......I cant find the damn thing!

Any suggestions??

Cheers chaps

Under the left hand side of the dash, inboard of glovebox. It is accessible once the glovebox is out.

Thanks for that mate. I didn't know if there were differences between the 8v and 16v, since on my valver the ABS relay is under the steering cowling by the earth block, hence I scratched my head when I couldn't find it on the 8v..... Knowing my luck, the problem will be elsewhere anyway, but the relay seems the obvious place to start!

Thanks for advice, I'll apply a hammer in the morning...

Cheers

Just a thought ... The CX ABS relay had a "fuseable" link inside the relay body itself.... if the BX one is similar , check it hasn't blown .... I soldered a small piece of wire across mine to get it going again after making sure it wasn't drawing excessive current. I was going to put an external fuse in the circuit, but never bothered ..... the car was written off a year later anyway ....

i havent got a relay on mine at all! Infact i didnt realise till now they had one, mine is just wired into some feed or other, and has a switch to turn it off too!

I call it the granny trap, when the blatently step out in front of you cos they can't be arsed to wait till there is a gap, flick the switch off, lock up the brakes and watch them run! Also lots of fun if you know your mate has his head under the bonnet (again) come screaming up and slock the brakes on oh the humour as he kacks his load!

Then there is the rev and run (thanks Billy) which i have used to amazingly spectacular results on my uni supervisor :D thank god he saw the funny side!

Blimey. what is the date of first registration? I thought all 8v GTi became Hurricanes sometime in late '92 early '93. And production stopped that year. An auto too. Any pics?

Duno about date of rego yet mate, it's defo M plate, very dark blue, indeed, one of the very last, interestingly it has no cat so I reckon it had been sitting around for a long time before being registered. She's down the garage at the mo, I'll endevour to get some piccies in the morning... No Air-Con, but I'm trying VERY hard to get the owner to part with it, needs a touch of body work, dent in N/S/R wing and both O/S doors have dents, but otherwise, it's a minter!

Oh, and ABS now sorted!! Ta muchly!!

The BX uses a standard five terminal change over relay without any internal fusing.

You're not wrong Tom, alas, the one in the car was deader than a hamster that's been run over by Fred Dibnahs Steam Roller........

Needs the arm bearings doing, but I want this car sooooooooo much!

They aint the sturdiest matey!!

Yeah, all fixed, MOT secured, bit of a bummer really, now it's mot'd the owners less keen to part with it......Shame, cos I want this car!

Goes like hell, everything feels tight, and dark blue really suits it.....
Perhaps I'll have to go round his house one night and knee cap him, wont be able to drive then, and he may be more inclined to part with it

Cheers
