Rear Arm Bearing Kits

Post by ellevie »

How many different makes of Rear Arm Bearing kits are available ?
I have had 3 kits made by SKF and one kit made by MAPCO.
There are some small differences between them.
Are SKF the most popular ?

Mine were SKF. I didn't know there were so many available.

They've worked well so far.

There seems to be quite a few differences between the MAPCO and SKF kits.

The most notable difference is that the MAPCO bolt has a much longer thread of 6.5cm compared to 3cm for the SKF bolt. I think I'll keep this bolt and use the old one instead when I come to use this set because it'll come in very handy in future for squeezing the thrust bearings onto the spacer. The SKF thread is way too short for this and I had to use loads of washers etc to pad it out last time.

The other notable difference is that the first 3cm on each end of the MAPCO spacer is machined down so that the diameter is slightly smaller than the SKF spacer, so that the bearings slide on freely.

Also, the geometry of the bearings is different; you can't put an inner bearing from one in the outer cup of the other.

Do the two types correspond to the old GSF cheap set (Mapco?) and "standard" (the SKF)?

I don't know a lot about bearings in general, but do know that SKF produce bearings for nearly every application under the sun (and, depending on where and how you buy them, at just about every price under the sun).
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

They may well do, I bought all four sets (three SKF and one MAPCO) second hand off eBay quite cheaply. I've really only been aware of GSF, ECP ect since joining the BX Forum about twelve months ago. MAPCO appears to be German although the name seems to have a French origin.
