Price of a cam belt / cam belt kit ?

Post by soxer123 »

I am wondering what sort of price I should be paying for a cam belt / cam belt kit for my 1990 1.6 BX meteor (hope that is enough info) ?

Just the bits, not the fitting - I need to price the job up as I reckon it's a must do this year for me.

Look on the GSF website. They'll almost certainly have a kit. Avoid Gates belts, specify a Dayco one.

Oh god, are Gates still in business? They were sh!te...

Er, a cambelt should set you back around £10 plus the Vodka And Tonic.

A tensioner is about £25 +VAT.
Or at leat they were last time I got some from GSF.

Part numbers N13117 (belt) 113 tooth
N13166 (tensioner)

There were tensioner kits (presumably to include tensioner & pulley) available from GS & F when I last looked, which seemed to undercut the price of the individual items. Check out the contents/availability of such a kit before buying if going for the whole cambelt & tensioner refit.

However, I'd strongly recommend doing cambelt only if it's your first, enlist the help of someone who has done one if that's the case, and shy clear of tensioners unless there are tensioner problems to be resolved on an urgent basis - in which case experienced advice/help is a must as the consequences of getting this less then 100% right can be unpleasant, expensive and immobilising...

At least a petrol cambelt should be more straightforward than a diesel one on grounds of space, unless it's a 16v.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

and whilst you're "in there" check the water pump out carefully, any staining around it and it would be best to replace that at the same time!

GSF still list the tensioner kit : 'N13085 CAM BELT TENS SET' at 36.50GBP.

This is a stunning price, nearly half that of the individual parts.

I think I will get one for my upcoming engine change.

Never used a QH cambelt so couldn't say really. But if QH belts are as crap as QH clutches then, er, hhmm.

I've always used Dayco belts, they are as good as it gets, and not expensive!
