LHM level indicator

Post by toddao »

Does it mean anything when the level indicator goes right up to the top of the plastic dome and stays there when the car is on and off? Is it just stuck?
Haven't added any or lost any as far as I know

They can stick sometimes, a gentle tap can free them, stick your finger down the filller hole to check level, you should get lhm on the end :)

I tapped it and it stayed up. Must I remove the whole thing and give it more persuasion? Finished fiddling for today any way, going in the garden with a cold one. Cheers Stewart

What position is the Height Selector in?

Check the Car when in the maximum height position, if it has moved and sits between the two red rings all good bar a little bit to add. If its still up the top then you either have to much LHM in or its stuck.

Try putting car in low, then when settled, select high, then get out and watch the indicator level. If it doesn't drop at all as the car rises up, suspect that there's either a surplus of LHM in the reservoir (no big problem) or the indicator is indeed stuck.

OR, to make 100% sure, remove the whole lid from the reservoir (prise round edges with screwdriver and lift). As you withdraw it upwards the level indicator should sink right to the bottom of the sight tube - if it isn't stuck.

If it is, it will be possible to use a finger to manipulate the float end of the indicator mechanism to free it up.

Regards overfilling - there seems to be a deep-seated misunderstanding, even among Citroen specialists, as to what part of the indicator to use as a level reference. My garage has regularly filled up my cars' reservoirs until the gold disc is at the uppermost red ring (and the yellow "top hat" is at the top of the tube) ... whereas the GSA / BX owner's manual (and Haynes and all other manuals) clearly state that it's the yellow "top hat" that should float between the two red rings when the car is in "high". I usually fill until the top hat is level with the top red ring. I had my BX "topped up" for me during it's winter service, even though it didn't actually need doing and I didn't ask for it!

I was slightly worried by Sally's apparently "high" LHM level - I thought it couldn't possibly be that high and that there must be something wrong with the indicator.

Then eventually I stopped worrying. Partly because the brakes and suspension continued to work.

But mainly because the warning light didn't come on. The warning lights are on several independent circuits and will let you know before there's any danger.
