Help - Leaking Bosch TZD Diesel Pump

Hi,

We took the car down to have a new cambelt fitted and after the guy said it had a water leak. Just been down to look at the water leak to bring it home and i have discovered its diesel not water.

The leak is coming from the pivot where the accelerator cable pulls on.(Bosch pump)
When this part (the arm)is pushed down the leak stops but on releasing its leaking so bad i cant drive it home. It has a sort of round plastic bit with the spring over under the arm , the leak is coming from the base of the arm mech.

I assume there are some O rings worn out or some thing has broken but i dont want to dissasseble anything as it all looks factory set and im going into the unknow. I cant find any info in the haynes on it either.
The car has 235k miles on it, so i guess the swivel part on the pump has worn.

Does anyone know what may have happened. Is it easily fixable or a new pump needed. Is this curtains for the old Bx .
If the pump does need changing, does anyone know where i can get one and/or if they are interchangable with any other car but to be honest thats not a route i really want to take.

Any help would be very greatfully recieved.

looks to be my problem.

I have seen the pump has a top half. Does this have to be split to fix the problem - it looks like it does.

If anyone knows the people involved in that post or anyone else has any tech info on the procedure i would be very greatfull.

Yep, almost certainley your 'O' rings have had it. (Theres two).

Yes you have to remove the lid from the pump, which is difficult, can be done without sopecial tools, but you'll be swearing ALOT!

It's painfully fiddly to get it right without breaking the damper on the accelerator arm...

Been there, done that....

I'd say, unless you have a spare pump lounging around and your EXTREMLEY confident, then just take it to a diesel injection specialists and get them to do it. It aint too expensive and it'll be Warrented!

Hi Mark,

I have renewed the shaft O ring on a N/A Bosh pump, this may be similar to the Turbo one. Pictures below that may help.

In fact I have another pump in pieces at the moment, pics taken from this one.

You have to locate the slot in the shaft, just to the right of the black cup washer, into the slot in the black plate to the extreem right of the piture below.
Then hook the other end of the spring into the hook as shown in the top of the picture below. Also the end of the max fuel screw on the to left must push against the the lever shown top right in the picture below.

(It makes the task much easier if the max fuel screw is removed first, but ensure the position is marked to enable the same postion on reasembly).

Also note the ferrule to the fixing bolt, top left, which must locate in the appropriate hole, top right bottom picture..

It's quite a tricky job, but like all things, once done becomes a lot easier.
I would not attempt the job insitu, remove the pump first and secure in a vice or similar, make up some hooked wire to locate the spring, and use good lighting.

Many tHanks for the pics and help.

I did ring some diesel specialists and they said about £120 to do it, which i think is a con and definatly not worth it. They were talking bushes and o rings and arms in some cases.

Looks like im doing it myself or its oxo cube time.

Depends why yours is leaking. I had a bosch pump leaking a while back, and took it in to a specialist. He stripped it there and then, and sure enough the bush and arm had big wear ridges in them. No question that they needed to be changed. The O-ring looked ok, but was of course changed as they're about 2p each.

Yeah, the 'O' rings only tend to leak once the bush and the arm have worn themselves really oval. £120 is not too bad a price from a diesel specialist.

If you could find a decent second hand pump then it would be easy enough to change the pump complete.

Surely someone on here must have a spare pump going for not much??

£120 doesn't sound too bad a price I paid £90 about 10 years ago for the same job from a local pump specialist.....well worth the money, it must have been leaking a bit before that although not enough to see and it was perfect afterwards.
