Is it the driveshafts?

Post by Oscar »

Hi

I have a developing vibration through the steering wheel. It used to be most evident at 90mph, so not a problem. Then it became evident at 80, and now it's apparent at 70-75mph.

Is this driveshaft wear developing? If not, what else might it be? And what would I need to repair and renovate things? Are new driveshafts available?

Oscar,

I'd tend to think a wheel balance is in order for the front wheels.
Give that a go.

Normally the gearstick shakes with a damaged driveshaft.

Also I'd have the tyres checked for delamination at the same time. My old Meteor was diagnosed with this - with the car on ramps, my mechanic spun the o/s rear wheel to show me how the tread rings tracked from side to side, when they should be perfectly true.

Stuck the back tyres on the front. Stick the front ones on the back. Test drive. Same symptoms? Driveshafts. It gets worse fairly suddenly and then the gearstick shakes like hell and the car scrabbles for grip pulling away. If your car is non-ABS, DLM is currently plundering a Tizzydee so I'll PM you his number

The tyres are new, so won't be delaminating yet. The tracking needs to be done.

I swapped front and back tyres a while ago, but the handling was awful - pulling to left and really rough - left to itself the car would have driven in a figure-of-eight!

The gearstick IS wobbling slightly, and there have been one or two scrabbles of late - but that may be my driving style.

So it looks like the jobs are: replacing the octopus, the bottom engine mount and the driveshafts. Lena WILL be pleased...
