D12 Turbo Auto

Post by Ian_Fearn »

I've been offered a 2.1 12v turbo diesel from an XM complete with an autobox that drove well before the car was broken for spares.

A quick chat with Vanny has got us thinking if its possible to fit this combo in a BX?

The D12 conversion has been done but what about the autobox?

I'm guessing that the Doc might be able to answer this.....

In short, er, no!

What autobox is it? Are we talking the ZF, or the auto adaptive thing found in the later ones??

Either way, fitting that lot into the engine bay of a BX would require a gearbox mount being made, assuming you could actually get the lump in the car at all, which would be BLOODY tight, then of course you'd have to think about the shafts, which is not insurmountable, but would be difficult.

I like the engine idea, I'm gona build up a 2.1 for mine, but unless it's the ZF box and you're prepared for some engineering work to the shell and shafts, probably best left alone really.

Sorry mate..

Thats not to say it couldn't be done, but it would be anything other than a straight swop...

Its the ZF box version but i'm not into making gearbox mounts up and getting special driveshafts.

Oh well, it was a nice idea while it lasted

Its amazing what a can of Stop Smoke will do!

The old girl is soldiering on but she's still a user.... (of oil!)

Plan is still to replace it after our hols. Have been testing the water to see if another Xantia V6 is allowed but she's rather attached to her BX....

Well it would be an interesting engineering project, but alot of effort really..

If the missus likes her BX (and you found a keeper there Ian!) I'd really just whap another engine in the BX you got, better the devil you know etc....

It's more the torque and wider scope for tuning that make the D12 a good engine really....although I'm not a big fan of the heads..

Spotted a couple of things, where does the battery end up? & on the far right hand side, that blue thing, is it a fuel saver device?

Battery stays where it is, it just isn't fitted on this one!

The blue box is the glow plug relay unit..

It’s a Dutch trick

There are very practised at this kind of swap

You only get a little more power (20hp ish ) but a shed load more torque (great for towing)

And makes the car an even more long legged :D

The Dutch must like 2.1 conversions for their hill climbing ability.
