Rear Arm Bearing Kits

Post by MULLEY »

I've had a look at the various posts in the past about peoples experiences of this BX quirk (ok pain in the ass), there appear to be various kit makes available. Can anyone advise which is the best one to get?

Also, is it wise to do both sides rather than just the one thats showing signs of leaning?

Cheers

The most common kit appears to be the SKF kit that comes from GSF. Nothing wrong with it. I've now fitted seven or eight of them, and have yet to have a major problem.

If you do one side, then the chances are that the other side is past it's best, but I probably wouldn't bother doing it until it looks like it's actually on it's way.

I had SKF bearing kits fitted to both rear arms on my BX. The offside was creaking and had got an advisory at MOT time. The garage asked me if I wanted the passenger side doing at the same time - and I'm glad I said yes: once out, it was immediately apparent that the bearing was just starting to go.

But it's fairly heavy, which might add significant P & P to NZ - GS & F should be able to advise (or consult Alan S in Australia bout his experiences trying to get parts shipped to the Southern Hemisphere).
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Thanks guys, I will check out GSF if I have no luck here. Can you give me the SKF No for the bearing and seal,(not the kit NO) they may be available locally. Thanks Gerry

Depends a lot on how bad it is as to which stage of the kit you want to get.
Personally, I haven't bought a complete kit for years possibly because as soon as I hear the symptoms of an arm failing, I whip it out and replace it.
I have bought just the bearings on a couple of occasions from the local SKF authorised dealer (a guy who repairs power tools would you believe) and if everything else is OK that's by far the cheapest option.
Problems we have had have been outlandish freight costs which can double the cost on heavy bits quite easily, stuff getting misplaced by customs and the latest trick since we've adopted the yank 'scare the crap out of the populus as often as possible' policy, parcels more often than not opened and contents "confiscated" for any weak reason, usually something that someone in customs fancies.
In my case, I also have to pay GST on the combined charges for Parts, freight, Import duties and Customs handling (if applicable) so prices quoted invariably double.
I'd suggest trying this guy in Melbourne if you can't source them in NZ.

Caravelle Imports <caravelle AT hotkey.net.au> (AT replacing @ for obvious reasons) as I find he is as cheap as overseas and the parts he keeps are all first class as is his service.

Best way may be to see if you can get a set of second hand arms, strip and see what you want, order the bits and set them up so all you need to do is swap arms as a complete unit. That way, you know what bits you need for certain before you order the parts and may save you having the car off the road any longer than necessary.
