Gti Cambelt

Post by MULLEY »

Should i buy a kit that includes the tensioners, or just get the cambelt changed? whilst i'm at it, should i also change the water pump? & again there appears to be various makes of kits & cambelts about, which are the best one's?

Thanks

Dayco belts are probably the best, and if the tensioners haven't been changed before, yep, recommend you do it. Also waterpump as they are cheap and easy to do while the belt is off. I neglected to change the tensioners on my TZD when doing cambelts and one of them actually broke - taking the cam and followers along with it  I won't make that mistake again...

Anyone know of anywhere that might be cheaper than either AEP Direct or GSF?

Water Pump GSF £20.56
Timing Belt Tensioner GSF £28.78
Timing Belt GSF £9.99 AEP £9.93
HP Pump Belt GSF £2.94 AEP £4.39

About 5-6 times what your 10% saving would be on that list.

Back again chaps, i've looked on GSF & they have a tensioner listed as follows:

N13166 TIMING BELT TENSIONER BX 1.6-1.9 >92 EXCL 16V (113 TOOTH)

I'm a bit concerned that this wont fit my 1990 Gti??? Anybody know?

We went through previously what the right pointing chevron meant and concluded that it wasn't "greater than" but "up to" in car part talk.
So the answer should be yes in your case. Confirm with GSF at the counter though.

Just as a side.
Here's a post from over here about a guy who had service done on a 1.6 Xsara he'd just bought.
Should make a few eyes pop when you compare prices some of these stealers charge over here.
We were quoted $350 for the 90,000km service including a full safety inspection and told that a cambelt replacement would cost an extra $210. This afternoon they contacted my partner and said the water pump was leaking and needed replacement and would cost extra. We were told that because we were allready having a service the extra for labour would be minimal.

We arrived there at 5.00pm and were given a bill for $1,270.00

We were in shock!

I expressed my surprise without being offensive and said the most I expected was maybe $700 to $800, even though I took into account this was a Citroen dealership and I knew it would be expensive.

They did not argue with us, were polite, appologised for a misunderstanding in communication and took $300 off the bill hoping they would not loose our future business.

Still we ended up paying $971.50.

The parts:

Oil filter $16.80
Sump plug washer $2.60
Pro Core 3000 Coolant 5L $32.00
Timing belt $186.24
Water pump $198.11
Water pump gasket $7.92
Mobil 1 15/50 $80.60
W/Supplies $17.80
Hazardous waste removal $8.25

The rest was labour.

Is this normal for a Citroen?

Scarey stuff innit???

$186 for a belt
Bloody hell, I'd glue some rubber bands together for that sort of money!

$198 for a water pump

Surley they were taking the pi$$... Thats extortion!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

It sure is - that's why I try and get most of my stuff off ebay or from the UK - in most cases even with shipping it's half the price I'd pay here...or less. The only things I buy here are oil filters, oil, coolant and tires - the rest I try and get elsewhere (i.e outside Australia). Glowplugs from a main stealer @ $30 each - ebay 11 stg for all 4 plus 4 stg for shipping...guess which one I went for.
cheers,
