BX 16 Problems
BX 16 Problems
My newly acquired steed has developed some mechanical problems,
A sllight blow from the exhaust turns out to be the manifold has cracked all the way round! Im no mechanic but can this be repaired or even patched up with some sealent? Or do I have to replace it.
The belt that powers the hydro pump is squealing and ive noticed that the pump stops sometimes turning when it is called upon, yet the belt keeps turning, is this a tension problem or a very tired pump thats seizing!
Thanks

New manifold ... New belt ...
There's a useful tip on the Japanese site about tightening the belt...

Without teaching you to suck eggs, try spraying the bolts/studs liberally with a good penetrating oil each day for a few days before the work...that way you may find that they will come out in one piece.

They should come out anyway, I've never snapped one yet.
They usually just wind the studs out with the nuts.
Make sure you use a new sealing ring on the manifold / exhaust joint, and obviousley get a new manifold / head gasket.
When doing them back up, dont do them murder tight. Evenly across all of them, out a heat cycle through them, then nip them up a bit more.

Re: BX 16 Problems
Nice to have someone else experiencing BX16 problems! I've had probs with new belts being squealy. As we know they do need to be *really* tight, so try tightening it before you get a new'un - but a newie might be a wise investment soon anyway if the belt's been slipping a lot (friction=heat). I found a good way of tensioning it, based on the suggestion of someone on this site. Undo the pivot and adjusting bolts, apply the open end of a combination spanner on the end of the pivot arm next to the alternator, pass a "dowel" through the ring end. Pull down on the spanner to achieve the right tension. Wedge the spanner beneath the front panel - I used a handily sized rubber torch! Then you've got two hands free to do up both bolts again. Remove the wedge and spanner. Hey presto!tim leech wrote:My newly acquired steed has developed some mechanical problems,

As to whether the pump is giving up - is it noisy?
Mark.
Pump seems to work fine mark although looks very old and rusty, and the suspension rises quickly and is smooth an dthe accumulator is fine, will try and tighten it up tonight. have some industrail strength exhaust sealent from work which I will try on the manifold for now until I get another as they seem scarce.
It depends on where the crack is but you might be able to get a jubilee clip round it if its in a tubular bit - then that would help hold your sealant in place.
With belts I usually tighten one bolt enough till it'll just hold then apply force with wood, spanners, tyre levers, nail bars - give it a good heave to get the belt tight - and then tighten the slider first. Often works as a crude form of ratchet. The sliders never work partially tightened - must be the pivot bolt.
