External window seals

Post by CitroenCrazy »

I didn't notice until I bought my first BX a few weeks ago, but it looks as if the external window seals seem to shrink.
Mine looks like the others I've seen recently, in that there's almost a 1cm gap at both ends.

Has anyone identified a donor vehicle that has slightly longer ones that (a) fit and (b) look right ?
I haven't been outside to measure them (if the rain ever stops....), but I guess fronts could be cut down to fit rear doors, but what about new / better fronts ?

TIA Andrew

mine's the same too. this is my second bx with this problem on the passenger sidein the top corner of the window, would be interesting to hear anyones solution to this. :D

what the misse does for the journey is put tissue in the gap and that seems to dampen the extra wind noise that you get!! :(

It could be due to the channel seal moving down the door recess grove.
If you lower the window, prise out the seal and pull upwards to gain the extra distance required. Some are quite stubborn to move, try raising the window at the same time. Usually you end up with a bulge at the top and the window fails to close fully. If you raise and then lower the window, forcing down the seal with the window moving to obtain the correct, noise free!! fitting.
May require several attempts.

Are we talking about the seal which runs all the way round the window or the rubber bit along the bottom of the window?

Yes the window seal does pull down with opening movement of the window and is easy enough to get back up. A spot of adhesive will cure this.

If it's the rubber bit along the bottom of the window, yes they do seem to shrink :(

Scrap yard would be best bet, but if not are you going to the national?

The break at the top is caused by the seal being dragged down by the glass as it moves. If you pull the side bit out you can re-position it and get rid of most of not all noise and you will barely see the join.

It really needs some glue - what sort I don't know.

Last time I glued one in, I think I used hotmelt glue, with gluegun. But I think pinkgrip or gripfix would be OK. The glue doesn't have that much work to do.

Are these boom seals still available from Citroen? Mine have all gone hard and don't seal too well. Was hoping to find new as I can't imagine ones from scrap yard being in any better condition.

Sorry for the thread hijack over

There are independent rubber suppliers who hold stock of all sorts of wonderful profiles. It may be that the window bottom seal (or others for that matter) are similar to a standard profile and you can buy new.

You may find someone publishing profiles on the net. You will find local distributors in yellow pages.

I enquired about a year ago and they were then. Price was £8 + vat. :)
