I've known engines run for a very long time with cracks between the valves, being engines with valve inserts.

I see the 'missing' tube has no fabric re-inforcement - so isn't it the fuel tube to the fuel heater on the back of the engine?- in which case the heater has been bypassed rather untidily.

OK Folks, Thanks for all your comments - I really appreciate your time and expertise, but I've come to a decision, which is I'll have to get rid of the car! You've all made contributions that have helped me come to the right decision, I think! I really rate these cars (well the turbo diesel vs. anyway!) and have had great fun in mine the last 18 months but the main issue is that I'm 3/4 of the way thru' renovating my house in Bristol (no bathroom at the moment...) and so time is at a premium.
