Aircon (bx16v)

Post by rob-bx16v »

Hi All,

Im currently in the process of stripping out the aircon system from a scrapped bx 16v. How much of the wiring do i need? or is it better to just take the whole loom??. I currently have all the pipework out, compressor/sump, condensor/dryer and bulkhead bits dismantled but im going back this week to remove the dash and pull the rest out. How easy is it to put all this back together in my red 16v??. Has anyone got any exploded diagrams of the aircon system??

cheers rob

if you know what your doing, then the aircon loom is in two halfs, engine side and interior side. There is actually only one wire that links the two halfs together, which makes life simple.

Realistically though the two looms are rather heavily integrated into the rest of the looms, having done it once and seperated the looms, there really isn't a good reason to, i'd swap the looms complete.

You'll need quite a bit of loom, the rngine side loom (goes all the way round the front of the car) and all three pieces of the Dash loom (which onvious means taking the dash out,and of course the airbox).

It isn't a task to be considered easy. I think it took me a day to swap the dash side stuff, but i'm no stranger to having the dash out.

A few thoughts on this.......................

Whether it is worth swapping over the entire loom or just separating the required aircon circuit is really up to you. Probably less work to separate the aircon though. There is not much really to the aircon wiring.

Dont forget the additional wiring for the second blower.
Another thing to consider is the aircon connections to the ECU. These are different for each ECU. So this it is worth checking the ECU nos.

You will find a layout schematic here.....

This applies to a non ECU BX - but is helpful nevertheless.

I probably have wiring schematics for 16Vs somewhere if you need them.

Hi There,

Cheers for both replys. The 16v ive stripped the aircon out of is a g plate and mines a k plate so the cars will both have diffent looms. Ive decide im going to take the whole loom from the g plater and then seperate the aircon loom and scotch lock into my loom. Im not going to attempt this myself but will pay an auto electrician to do the wiring work. I will just fit all the componants in place. I wont be beaten on this one!.

NEVER scotch lock any car electrics if you want them to last more than a mile! An auto electriciam worth hiring wont use them, so a good indicator as to competency.

As for mating with ECU's, the fast idle function is only available on some of the 16v ECU's, and to be honest its not really needed on a motronic unit (but fairly critical on a Jetronic).

there won't automatically be magor differences between a G and K plater given that the G will be a cross over. I'd check the ECU's first, and if there the same just swap the looms. Infact the G plater will likely be a 3 row wont it, in which case you'll only loose the knock sensor which isnt critical. You've got to consider that seperating looms is a mostly mental task, and something that can be done really wrong, while removing one loom and shoving another in is a relatively simple labour task!

One thing you do get with the Aircon loom is run on fans, that is they are run from relays which are permanantly live and will run on after the engine is off. Doesn't sound like anything exciting, but its an extra four relays that you'll have to pull though the firewall/bulkhead. I actually already had run on fans when i added the aircon loom and simply tacked into them (they came from a 405 with aircon so had a multiplug for aircon overide)
