smoky TZD

Post by richjenn »

Does anyone have any tips?
My TZD was like a slug - zilch turbo boost below 3000rpm.
Took it to PTS and they got the turbo boosting, but now when under load the motor smokes like a chimney. (Goes very well power wise)
It squeezed through its MOT on emmissions (by 0.03%!), but it's embarassing to drive.

I've heard so many reports about what can and can't be done without major dismantling on the diesel pump.
I've spent quite a lot so far, so would prefer if I could tinker b4 spending more!
Ive read, on a Peugeot blog, that by adjusting the screw on the rear face of the CAV pump, after loosening the locknut, (as indicated on attached pics if I can get them to load!), it's possible, by experiment, 20 degrees at a time, to weaken/richen the mix, and by trial and error get the exhaust cleaner, at the risk of loosing oomph.
I've ALSO been warned off getting involved with this screw!
Has anybody got an idea of which way (clockwise or anti-clockwise) you need to go to reduce richness, and a sensible turn degree-wise to go not to upset things radically, but make a noticeable change. I'm expecting it to be a several step process! Needless to say, Haynes says nowt!
Any views on the issue very much appreciated.
Cheers

You obviousley have the CAV pump by the sound of it.
I wouldn't advise mucking around with the screw on the end of the pump.
If it's not smoking off boost then it's a fair bet the base fuelling is ok.
If it's smoking when on boost then it is possible to adjust the on boost fuelling.
I suspect the problem lays there since you suggest it didn't smoke until the boost was adjusted..
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Try running a blend of biodiesel with your derv, that might improve your smoking problem.

Personally i like my smokey bx, it puts off all these bleeding tailgaters, drop a gear & floor it & they dissapear in a cloud of soot

In which case surely the easiest thing to do would be to take it back to them and ask them to set it up properly this time, as they've clearly overdone it a bit!

Well yeah... That makes sense actually!

Or you could let me set it up!
Then it wont smoke Toooooo much, and will go like Saturn 5 on Viagra, for a very short time.

Then it will stop and remain stopped, although the plus side is, you wont need any tools to strip the engine, it'll do it all on it's own!

Problem is, it's a 350 mile return trip for me to PTS, so that's why I am looking for alternative - but it does seem that it's the best idea after all!
Thanks v much to all - any ideas still welcome if any one has licked this DIY wise!!
