Where's my glow plug light gone?

Post by paulwitchard »

Had a go at replacing the earth connection on the battery today - some bodger had been there before me and the car (1.7 TZD turbo diesel estate) was proving difficult to start as the battery connection was loose, it was held on by a self tapping screw, screwed vertically between the battery terminal and the connection. Found a new battery terminal and connected it all up, but afterwards the glow plug light will not work so I have to study the other dash lights closely and see when they get brighter after the glow plugs have gone off. Found 3 connections + the battery one on the inner wing held on by bolt with 10 mm head - is there supposed to be another one earthing the light and making the circuit that has disappeared or is it just one of those horrible coincidences, anyone any advice to offer before I start attacking the dash to get at the bulbs - not the easiest of jobs I fear!

The lack of glowplug lamp is either a dead lamp, or the specific lamp feed from the glowplug relay/timer is duff. Remember the lamp is NOT fed from the glowplugs, it's a seperate feed from the blue relay/timer unit.

The screw in the battery clamp is a fairly standard quick mod to hold the (frankly crap) PSA lead battery clamps in place. It's better than nothing, but not as good as changing the clamps for brass ones. I've done a write up elsewhere.

Had a squint at the sticky 'tips for solving diesel starting issues' cleaned the relay contacts and its all back going again, light included.
Have to agree with David about the poor quality of the PSA connectors - about on a par with those horrible things that Renault use!
