Starting problems

Post by kiwi »

Not always but now becoming frequant mainly after cars been standing for 8 hours or more (overnight or all day) all I get is the ignition just click, Slight rock of the car by rocking in the seat gets it going.
So I am assuming starter Motor on its way out.

Question I can not find a clear answer to is will a BX16 starter motor work on a BX19 with Air Con fitted.

The Battery is new but its one of those Calcium ones and I have heard that they do not recharge very well unless on a proper charger designed for the purpose. So there is a possibity of a fault there.

Sounds like a classic case of worn brushes in the starter. Not a really big job, we've done a few and shouldn't cost any more than about A$30 IIRC for parts.

I'm fairly certain the 16V and TZi starters are the same as they are basically the same bottom end.

Cheers Alan

No its a 1580cc Starter Motor that I have as a spare, as soon as you say BX16 everyone assumes 16V in this neck of the woods I noticed.

BX19TZS needs a new starter the one I have is from a BX16RS!

Although if its just bushes is that an easy job to do?

The motors are probably the same - take them both off and compare them - does the drive look the same - have the pinions the same number of teeth, is the mount the same?

You may be able to find new brushes - depends on finding the right supplier. Are the brushes free? Are the solenoid contacts clean (if you can get at them - I seem to recall you had to unsolder old Lucas ones to get at them) . . .

You can read about it here including part number:

You might be surprised at how many 1.6 parts fit the 1.9 and 16V and as Jeremy says, this could be another one.
