Guide to 12 volt electrics.
Looks like a comprehensive guide to electrics - aimed at boat owners but much of it will translate directly to cars.

Electrics guide
OMG
Most comprehensive guide I've ever seen on this issue. Cant think of anything related to the issue not covered by this guide. Certainly a perfect reference for the newcomer in car electrics.

I agree with the DOC i seem to remember somewhere in my time in the motor trade (i think pontius was still in flying school)
There was no such thing as electricity and that the wires transmitted smoke around the system.
The bigger the wire the more smoke it could tranmit hence the starter motor has the biggest wire.
It takes a lot of smoke to start an engine.
and therfore when you short it out the seal breaks and all that smoke comes out.
If you have ever tried to jump sart a car with a set of cheap jump leads you will know what i mean.
I think all of the above is now irrelavent as modern technology has replaced the smoke with something more environmentally freindly.
Regards Kermit
