How do I get this out of that?

Post by Kitch »

In the middle of swapping various steering related parts on the BX; I've got a new pinion, rack, ram and a rubber coupling. But how do I get the metal bolt part out of the old one?

It doesn't appear to be bolted in or anything!

Ah yes, it's the wonder coupling!
Forget it!
Get a complete unit, they aint expensive from Cit, and will save hours of "fun" trying to remove the bolts from the old unit.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Oh joy, more delays! I'm already a day behind as ECP supplied me a rack where the female stud that the ram bolts onto has been snapped off

Cheers!

I had to fit Allen headed bolts with Nyloc nuts but you need to be careful which way up you put them or they'll foul on other parts of the steering box.

I used one of these with Nylock nuts when I changed it on the GT. It does make life much harder. I fiddled for ages, and at about 3.30 AM using a magnetic under car lamp I discovered that there is a rubber grommet so that you can get access from the footwell. With the nylock nuts held from behind with a ratchet wedged somewhere and clamped in place, an allen key extention from inside the car is the way to go. To avoid any fouling, I then hacksawed off the extra bolt length from behind. It was a horrible job just before a holiday to Scotland, but I had to do it as the disk was so split that the steering could have failed at any point.

My old one is cracked in three places, but I was told not to worry as although it won't exactly help the feel of the steering, it wouldn't fail as there is a metal band inside it keeping it together.

I bought a genuine one yesterday and it's all fitted up. £22!!
