LHM Fluid Level

LHM

Post by charlotte001 »

Seems to be a touch difference between the petrol and diesel. I'm going by the Petrol one as I found the original service schedule and the orginal manual that came with the car as new. Only thing is now Ive put more fluid in the bottle there's a very wierd noise, sounds a bit like rubbing a baloon with your hand. Is this a sign of some of the suspension components are coming to the end or is it normal?

Is it a faux pas though Philip? My book is 91-92 era (ref: BX-GB-3001) and therefore is likely the latest revision, so the earlier diagrams may have been incorrect.

It seems strange that this could have been an accidental change and pass the proof readers if they are so used to the earlier diagram.

I can say that working to this level the tank does not spill LHM and stays predominantly clean.

It could well remain a conundrum as who would be able to obtain further (and accurate) information from Citroen after all this time?

Incidentally when initially serviced by Citroen & LHM was replaced they filled to this level 'cos I checked.

To update the car has just come back from the local specialist who has advised me that the LHM level is ok.

Hi, thought I'd better have a another physical look at this float to see if that gives a further clue to this puzzle.

This is not a brass disc but I would say yellow plastic on a white shaft. The float top in my case is not yellow but a definite orange. I can see the brass switch contacts below the sight glass and they are definitely different in colour to the yellow indicator ring. I would not disagree though that the yellow indicator will likely operate the switch contacts should the level fall.

This revised level gives you I suppose less likelihood of the red light coming on when you corner over the old scheme but overall it doesn't raise the level massively. :?

This image is from the BX service manual.
It's fairly clear that the umbrella shape should be between the min/max markers.
You can see that the lower disc activates the sensor when the umbrella goes below min.

Yep that's right..

Here is an even closer look, and this one came out of a BX 16 petrol car...

The bottom disk is definately brass, and I set it to show the maximum level too...

I just checked some of my books, as if it's supposed to be the brass bit, mine have been low! But according to my books, the Mk1 says orange disc, the white faced 16v manual says orange disc and one of the last ones made for a BX (the grey Xantia style one ref BX-GB-3002) also says orange disc.

I think yours must be special!

Ok
I meant waytogo's not yours

Either way you'll have enough, although I've always found if I overfill it, it spills on corners and can get mucky, although it wouldn't actually damage the system as it'll only take what it needs. Plus it keeps your inner wings well lubed!
