Wipers on GRX

Post by Terry »

I guess this one's an oldies but...

Having got GRX back on the road, I was out in a storm yesterday and the wipers almost failed. Well, almost.

Over about five minutes that got very much slower, and then ground to a halt.

Tried it again today, same thing, just a little jerk on the wiper arm when I turn the ignition on, and nothing else.

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like the motor's dying. Mine does the same.. really must change it!

Can the motor be opened? :? If so, replacement carbon brushes and a clean of the commutator will probably fix it. :D

Yeah, they aint at all hard to pull apart.

Mine's goosed, and since I have a spare in the boot (where it's been for 6 years!) I'll probably just change it TBH....

I think they are still available new though.

Try squirting some WD40 on the bearing at the bottom of the wiper, the one that the wiper spindle rotates about.
Worked for me.

Doc your lazy, as proven infront of your very eyes it only takes 5 minutes to change the motor!

I suspect though that the fault will infact be the splined on both the wiper blade and motor having failed. Same thing that PiLsY's was suffering from the other day, fixed with replacement wiper and arm. Really these things would be better off being keyed in rather than having splines made of cheese

I know I'm lazy!
But should it ever pack up completly I have a spare in the boot, which is where it can stay until I have time or can generally be fagged to do it!

Taking the motor apart is easy and a good wash out
Some very fine wet and dry clean up the commutator (remember to clean out any copper from between the segments)and the brushes lube and rebuild good as new.

Done mine and turned up a new brass bush for the spindle runs very well indeed pity the car does'nt.

Good idea that Doc carrying the spare in the boot i suppose you are a subscriber to the old saying. If it aint broke don't fix it!

Regards Kermit :) :)

Had Doc replaced the motor 6 years ago - the replacement would probably have failed by now!

I wonder if it still works anyway?

Yeah it still works, I plug it in every now and then.
Tis true though, 6 years of use would surely have killed it by now, as is, it's brand new, still!

Although the old one is getting well ropey now, so it's probably about time I fitted it TBH..

very much doubt it's the motor at fault - as previously stated, the splines on the spindle are probably worn.

easy fix (and one i did 4 years ago that's still going strong) - remove wiper arm and wrap a layer of normal kitchen tin foil around the spindle. then refit arm, tighten, and bob's your uncle. no need to go fannying about with the motor :D

I've copied this one into the BX folder on my computer in case the problem arises again. Many thanks

I finally got around to changing the motor in mine on Sunday, makes a huge difference, I can actually see when it rains!
And an added bonus is the wiper actually parks in the same place every sweep!

The motor in the old one is FUBAR, totally FUBAR and the spindle is sooo knackered the arm was wearing the big plastic nut away!
In shall keep it for old times sake though..
