i noticed the other day whilst peering down the back of my engine something looking like it had ripped and was exposing the shiney piston of the hydraulic steering ram. had a feel around underneath, it seems i've got some kind of greasy black papery cover wrapped loosely around the piston its entire length as if to protect from dirt.
Is this normal? i couldn't find it in the Haynes manual. and does anyone know where i can find a replacement / how to fit it?

... as the protruding piston is constantly wetted in LHM by the natural steering movements in/out the ram cylinder.CaM wrote:yeah some have a plasticy boot thing over them.
they're usually ripped too, i wouldn't be too concerned about it...

If you bother its perfectly alright lubing it with some standard grease. It will at worst prolong the ram's service lifeCaM wrote:mine's dry..... well, dry enough. I can't see it failing any time soon

My 19triEstate is a monopoint 110 bhp'ish engine and returns some 11.5km pr Liter on 95octane in daily use. I have some 12km main road with low traffic density, and some 8km city driving with moderate traffic density.
I had to leave my TRI in the yard unfortunately, as a pre-MOT revealed rather hefty corrosion on the front corner RHS jacking point, heavy valvestem oil leaking and a hole in the front section of the cat downpipe.
It was simply cheaper sourcing another BX with 1.5 year's MOT still left
- thats btw a '91 1.6meteor.
