greaseproof paper round the hydraulic steering ram?

Post by maxgreenwood »

i noticed the other day whilst peering down the back of my engine something looking like it had ripped and was exposing the shiney piston of the hydraulic steering ram. had a feel around underneath, it seems i've got some kind of greasy black papery cover wrapped loosely around the piston its entire length as if to protect from dirt. :?

Is this normal? i couldn't find it in the Haynes manual. and does anyone know where i can find a replacement / how to fit it?

... as the protruding piston is constantly wetted in LHM by the natural steering movements in/out the ram cylinder.

If you bother its perfectly alright lubing it with some standard grease. It will at worst prolong the ram's service life

My 19triEstate is a monopoint 110 bhp'ish engine and returns some 11.5km pr Liter on 95octane in daily use. I have some 12km main road with low traffic density, and some 8km city driving with moderate traffic density.

I had to leave my TRI in the yard unfortunately, as a pre-MOT revealed rather hefty corrosion on the front corner RHS jacking point, heavy valvestem oil leaking and a hole in the front section of the cat downpipe.
It was simply cheaper sourcing another BX with 1.5 year's MOT still left

- thats btw a '91 1.6meteor.
