Broken trip meter

Post by classic2cv »

The trip meter in the speedo has stopped working after I pressed a bit too hard while I was trying to reset it

Can it be repaired or do I have replace the unit ?

Have you tried "moderate violence" tapping the reset pin ?

A very small hammer lightly tapping the pin may just do the trick.
The idea is to make a lightweight, but sharp, impact blow on the pin.

You may even hit your luck if you repeatedly flip your finger against it.

Otherwise its really great entertainment removing the housing and digging out the speedometer head unit :D

thats how i used to do it until i pressed it a bit hard with a ballpoint pen and now the button moves but nothing happens

i need to replace some bulbs so i'll dig out the speedometer head unit and see if i can fix it

i have a spare so i'll see if can replace anything that i might have broken :)

I flicked it with my finger to zero it, eventually wouldnt do it anymore, so a replacement speedo head went in.

On inspecting it, the teath had been mangled & thats why it was jammed.

To keep the mileage correct, i removed the mileometer barrell & swapped it into the replacement head, worked a treat. So working trip & showing the correct mileage.

Handy tip, sellotape the mileometer that way it doesnt move, so when you push it into its slot in the speedo head, the figures dont move. Once fixed in, remove sellotape & voila, all aligned nicely....

Halfrauds ...........or a decent :?: :? car spares/diy/electrical shop......ask for "Electrical Switchcleaner" .........it comes in a can .........just like wd40.
It does'nt always work ..........but most of the switches/contacts etc on my tzd have benefitted from it at some time or other in the last 4years I've owned it....btw,a buddy who is into "amateur radio" etc. told me about it.

I have to agree electrical switch cleaner is the must have item in the BX tool box
Saved my bacon a few times, windows jammed down squirt all is well with the world MAGIC :!:
Also helps to remove greasy mit marks from upholstery.
It's a bit like the automotive answer to cilit BANG.
does everything with just one can (it's amazing)

Regards Kermit :)
