Oh no! 20/50 of the Tesco variety is much too thick and not up to the job at all What next, a bottle of leak-stop in the LHM reservoir to cure a duff Octopus
I think even 15W/40 is getting a bit borderline in an XUD. Halfrauds semi-synthetic diesel stuff seems OK these days and besides, if you're quick you can get a set of free screwdrivers
That leak will more than likely be the cam cover gasket. A doddle to replace but don't go crazy tightening it down. Just tight enough to seal and no More. Mind you, as you say, they do indeed all do that sir, that is, leak a bit around the cam cover. It wouldn't be an XUD if it didn't

15/40 is fine in an XUD, especially when it's got a few miles on it.
But 20/50 in a turbo engine is asking for trouble.
As above, cure the leak rather than throw heavier oil in. Thats beyond the bodgiest of bodges frankley.

Hi Doc
posting a reply at 2.24 am that is dedication beyond the call of duty.
well done that man.
I have to agree 20/50 should be used for lubricating door hinges not turbo's
The free screw drivers would be useful but i don't have anymore roomin my tool box.
Regards Kermit

Not at all mate, I got your sarcasm, and applaud it, just thought it may be worth specifying for those people that read something and take it as read, you know how some people are, and I was a pedant in a past life!!

Not being a BX owner Jon I'm not sure but Dad's 205D, which has the same engine, has an oil-wetted filter so it could be completely normal.surrey_man wrote:its also got oil in air filter but thats the lest off the cars problems at the mo
If it is, you have to give the foam a good clean in solvent and then, when dry, re-soak it in light engine oil.
Funnily, oil is a good filteration medium due to dirt sticking to it like a fly paper.
All those high performance K and N cone jobs are oiled.

The BX TD is prone to wetting the outlet (middle of the car) end of the air cleaner with oil. If you look at it there is a breather pipe joining into the airbox next to the outlet and oil which is not trapped by the rather small separator (round disc like thing) passes through the air box and while the vapour goes back into the engine the oil drips on to the element.
TD air cleaners need changing quite frequently as when the turbo is running the amount of air passing through them is huge. If only the first inch or so is being contaminated - then there's no real problem.
I'd change the oil for the proper grade, fit a new oil filter of course and replace the air filter and see what happens.
If you're still getting excessive contamination then you may have other (more serious) problems.
