1992 BX19TXD recent purchase

Post by Mike F »

Over the weekend I purchased this car which has automatic transmission. It has a much better body and interior than my 1989 BX19RD which is very tired and may become a donor car. it has a good engine and gearbox.

The new car drives well but needs some MOT work, I got it for £125 with 6 months road tax.

I'm curious what the TX stands for because although its diesel its not a turbo.

My Haynes manual is quite sketchy on servicing the auto transmission - is there a filter in it? Is any Dexron 3 fluid OK to use?

If the auto trans fails how feasible would it be to put the manual gearbox from the 19RD in?

Mike.

Do not under any circumstances put Dexron 3 in the auto transmission, if you do then it will suffer premature death as it's not compatable! :!:

Correct fluid is Dexron 2.

The gearbox cannot be totally drained via the drain plug as much fluid is retained in the torque converter. Drain what you can then refill via the dipstick tube. Only fill to start of dipstick then drive the car until fluid hot & check again topping up to level now if needed. Must be Dexron 2 and if Dexron 3 has been used previously by mistake then you will need to drain and refill several times to try and save the box.

/\ what he said.
DIII will murder your transmission very quickley indeed.
Yes there is a filter, which is easy enough to get to, and cheap enough to buy.
It rarely if ever gets replaced so get yourself a shiny new one.

As long as the box is looked after (regular oil changes, keeping the filter clean etc) there's no reason why it cant have a long and reliable life.

There isn't much to adjust (kickdown cable adjustment is VERY important, other than that there's just the brakeband adjuster which shouldn't require buggering about with).

Yes it's possiblr to retrofit a manual bos, but you'd need, a clutch cable, a pedal box, all the gearlinkage assembly and rods, and a flywheel.
It's quite alot of work actually.

The "T" does not denote turbo, all turbo cars were badged as "Turbo".
The "T" stands for Tres..
French eh  !
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Thanks for that advice, the transmission is working well so I want to keep it that way. I am surprised that Dexron 3 is so bad for it, when I changed from Dexron 2 to 3 in my old Mercedes the transmission became much smoother. Interesting that you can't drain the torque converter, clearly this transmission is a different to the others I have had experience of.

But is it still running well today???

As we said earlier Dexron 3 is a totally different product to Dexron 2 and is not an upgrade to implement on a service!

Yes, it has been running on it for several years - the car is in Australia and an auto transmission specialist I went to advised using it - probably done 40.000 km on the Dexron 3! The car itself has done in excess of 500,000km - its a diesel, and I used to run it on Biodiesel. Still have the car but its laid up in the garage while I am in UK.
