Thanks for the help David and Jeremy. I have confirmed the cable is not broken by spinning it with an electric drill - but I will take a closer look at the end before taking the drive gear out. I agree that it seems like an unlikely cause, but if the likely has been eliminated....

I think the investigation will have to wait for a while anyway, me plenty busy at the moment.

Cause of problem:

Now replaced and cable-tied away from any possible contact with the exhaust :roll:
