Would this work on a BX? & if so why hasnt anyone tried

I think its geared to rev harder than an 8 valve GTi or non-turbo diesel (21.5 MPH per 1000 rpm rings a bell) - and as most on here are running diesels we'd go deaf. (N/A diesel about 23 MPH per 1000RPM - TD - about 26.5)

Could keep you busy on a 16 valve.

So the ratio's could be changed to actually make a usable 6 spd box??

I wonder if that could mean running either a petrol or diesel at 70mph with the engine only doing about 2000rpm.....

gearbox cover stick out under the front N/S chassis leg by an additional 25mm or so, severely restricting right hand lock. Not a problem if you go anti clockwise round a roundabout, but other wise its a total nuisance. Does fit fine though. I believe the mod has been done to a foreign valver.

Thats a bit of a shame Vanny, i was getting a teenzy bit excited about having 6 speeds & having fantastic economy in either the petrol or diesel models....

Know of any other 6spd boxes that'll work without any mods?

Or is there a trick to be had on the 5spd boxes to change the ratios?

I have heard of petrol's being given the diesel 5th gear cog to lower the revs to boost economy, but dont know if that makes much difference or not?

Yeah, there's more than one 6 speed BX knocking about already, and at least another 1 "in process".. so it's not unique.

Personally I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

It's not difficult to play about with the gearing though, my TD is anything but standard.
I did consider upping the gearing in the valver for a while, but decided in the end I actually dont mind it as it is.
