16valve starter motor

Post by nstarmore »

Just wondering if anyone knows whether the 16valve used the same starter motor as any of the other models because I think the solonoid is knackered and the car needs to be moved (would rather not bump it unless I have to), since 16valve's are far from common if I can get a temporary second hand one it would be great.

Any XU starter will fit the D6C. As such the valver had a motor specific to the valver given that it was fairly short and had a support bracket on the back end of it.
But if you ditch the support bracket (two 13mm bolts) then you can fit any XU motor, including a diesel one if thats what you get.

errrrrhh ... ???

To my knowledge the valver starter motor has got different ring starter gear compared to the rest of the XU range ... ???

I do hope I'm wrong, so lets see ...

Nope, it will run any XU motor. I know of at least three that have diesel starters, I fitted two of them!

Well hopefully you're wrong, cos mine has a non-16v starter too! Like Doc said, the original had some dumb bracket on the back which clearly wasn't needed. It was much bigger than the replacement too! Made the replacement much easier to fit although still a total faff until you realise it's easier to remove the inlet manifold first

Earlier 8V bxs also had the rear starter bracket, and the larger starter motor.

I expect the later starter is smaller as it is more modern and a better design, and it does seem to be more powerful too.

Wiring the starter solonoid via a relay instead of directly from the key switch also helps.
