Re: TXD Turbo Fuel pipes....(sorted, and now MOT'd!)
I've acquired a leak in a rusty fuel line, and have ordered new front and return pipes on eBay for £12 each, but I'm not sure how they fit at the tank end (the workshop manual mentions nothing about this!) - I was expecting there to be some access underneath the rear seat allowing disconnection of rubber pipes from the top of the fuel tank, but there is none.
Do I understand that the steel brake pipes just enter some rubber pipe which only just protrudes, or needs to be pulled down from below?.
Also, I suppose there is no alternative to having diesel gushing out in between disconnecting the old pipe and connecting the new one?

Yes that's the jist of it, a pair of long nose plyers might prove usefull.andycadabra wrote: Do I understand that the steel brake pipes just enter some rubber pipe which only just protrudes, or needs to be pulled down from below?.

Disconnect the hoses at the tank end via the inspection hatch under the back seat (make sure fuel level is not on full on the gauge, as the auxiliary fuel tank on higher spec models is above the main tank, and A LOT of fuel will spill otherwise...)
Tie some wire or string to the rubber fuel hoses (replace if perished) and this will allow you to pull the hoses lower to make it easier to join to the new metal pipes. It saves you trying to thread them up back past the tank!

^ that sounds a much more refined way of doing it, I replaced mine with HGV nylon air/fuel pipe. they won't rust again.

Re: TXD Turbo Fuel pipes....(sorted, and now MOT'd!)
Great! - I see, RxBX had mentioned there was access under the rear seat but all I could see was steel covered by soundproofing, but having dug away some of this, I've managed to find the round hatch covering the pipes, so an alternative to the bleak picture of a tankful of diesel emptying in my face I'd understood from Defenders post!. I'm not sure I could tie a reliable knot around the rubber pipe by itself, but if I replace the hose clip having disconnected the hose, that should give the string something to lock on to.
Unusually, I'm just a couple of gallons short of a full tank - could this be a problem with regard to the auxiliary tank you mentioned Mat? If there is an auxiliary tank I can't see that it is situated any higher than where the pipes are..

the aux tank is in the wing, and sits higher than the main tank, so you'll want to use a bit, or drain it down other wise you'll get 4 gallons making a bid for freedom!

Re: TXD Turbo Fuel pipes....(sorted, and now MOT'd!)
As I found to my cost, when leaving the small amount (or so I thought...) of fuel in the pipes to drain while I went away to do something else. The level gauge only takes into account the main tank, so that is why for the first 100 miles or so the needle doesn't move. Once the extra tank is empty, the main tank level starts to drop so if you are below full you should be OK.docchevron wrote:other wise you'll get 4 gallons making a bid for freedom!

The TZD definitely has this? How annoying! that space could have been used for storage of jack, oil, LHM etc, rather than equipping the car for those 400 mile journeys you make without passing a single petrol station...

The extra range comes in handy for me - if I fill up on the French side, I can do a round trip of 600+ miles in Blighty without having to put any more fuel in!andycadabra wrote:The TZD definitely has this? point taken!, but there is always the option of filling some of those triangular plastic fuel cans that fit neatly at the back of the boot, though I'm not sure how many of these Customs and Excise approve of you having...

They're not keen at all - and neither are the ferries. And anyway, the inside of the car's usually jam-packed full of other stuff!

Re: TXD Turbo Fuel pipes....(sorted, and now MOT'd!)
I thought that might be the case!, I still have Normandy cider and tins of Cassoulet from Lidl from 10 years ago... I presume this auxiliary tank is on the same side as the filler cap, but certainly is well hidden if it's capable of holding 4 gallons. Makes me wonder if there's an equal unused space in the nearside wing which could be turned into a useful cubby-hole..?

Re: TXD Turbo Fuel pipes....(sorted, and now MOT'd!)
Yes, it's tucked up at the back of the wheel arch. So there is a similar space on the other side, but the problem would be accessing it. I'd be more inclined to put an extra auxiliary tank in there so I can do 800 miles without filling up!
