Air-con fixing

Post by Mike E (uk) »

Hi,

Not on a bx, but a 1997 car:

The evaporator got broken a few years ago, and the gas leaked out.

Is is worthwhile me fitting a new evaporator and receiver/dryer for about £100 then taking the car to a specialist for a nitrogen leak test, evacuation and regas?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike -

As I understand it from several a/c specialists submissions, the worst scenario is exactly a leak left ignored for longish, as then humid air will get into the system over time. This sets off severe corrosion all over in the system making it rubbish to repair.
I suggest you consult your a/c garage for further information before forking out any good money on new parts.

Mike, if you can get parts for £100 then it would be worth a try.

Have a good look at the expansion valve (if it has one) as these are subject to corrosion.

Most aircon guys don't bother doing N leak tests. They just put it on vacuum and see if it holds for 20 mins. See if you can get them to do a much longer vacuum test. If it then fails you will not have the expense of a recharge.

Ideally I would get it flushed out, but that is extra cost. Anywy the new drier will catch any debris so - go for it and hope for the best.

Who will you be using for the recharge ??

Thanks for the replies.

The recharge will be done by a local garage who did a good job recharging my 406 a few years ago. they are not cheap, but I think they have all the proper gear.

I will ask if they can flush the system out. As I am saving on the parts and labour, I am willing to pay if I get a job that lasts a long time.

What should I look for when checking the expansion valve?

thanks,

Mike

The expansion valve is ally. They tend to corrode around the unions inside the valve if there is moisture in the system while it is in use. The oxide then spreads itself around the system.
It is easy to see and deal with.
