Possible FDV failure

Post by kiwi »

Got a slight leak from the FDV and have noticed a bit of a wobble to the steering wheel. Wheels are balanced wheel nuts are ok and no sounds of knocking so could they be connected? That is Leak in the FDV and power steering pulsing?

Time to do that overhaul?

Where's it leaking?
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

From the side where the replacement seals go. Not any of the unions so not just a tighten up case.

Where I've had bad FDV leaks on BXs and I've replaced the whole unit, that has been the area that's started leaking and gets progressively worse. FDV function has been pretty much unimpaired though, despite the leaks. Suspect you'll have to overhaul or replace, or have to live with increasingly larger pools of lhm on the drive.

As for the steering wobble, it could be a red herring: how old is the lhm, when was it last changed, and are there any signs of weakness at the pump (slow rise, knocking)? Also, what are the ambient temperatures like at the moment - hot or cold?

FDV circus

Post by B-Hive »

Hi there

I am in the middle of an FDV issue myself.. It seems symptoms from these components can be a bit unpredictable. Mine was leaking..steering sorta ok..but tended to sometimes pulsate...I could live with both issues but when i swapped the HP pump for an unrelated reason it must have stressed a failing FDV and I lost power steering.. So i have now swapped out another FDV..power steering restored but this one leaks badly.. plan is to rekit one of them with a kit on the way..it's probably overkill as it most likely needs just the piston seals from any auto shop for a few bucks. So I'm going to have a bet both ways and fix up the other one using just new o rings and use this one. That way if it works properly (which I'm certain it will). I will have a fully kitted one on standby.

good luck
