Smoking 16

Post by Tim Leech »

No not fags, but my newest aquision, which seems to be chucking some black smoke out under brisk acceleration, which if it were a TD I would expect!

Its definatly NOT blue oil smoke and the engines just been serviced with new filters and plugs, she smells like shes running rich but it runs very well and the acceleration is quite sprightly.

Im thinking the carb needs setting up?

Thanks.

That's not just slightly rich, it's exceptionally rich.

So much so that one of the jets is probably loose.

Who needs a gas tester when you've got eyes!!

I think also bad floats can cause over rich mixture - does it tick over OK?

Which reminds me, I must must get round to using my Gunson colortune kit on my BX! Bloody waste of money as it's been sitting in my shed for months.. Oh hang on, I think I remember why.... because it came with the 14mm attachment as standard and the BX has the smaller diameter sparkplugs and I need to buy an adaptor... #-o

BX is 10mm yes?

Cheers,

Mark.

It only smokes under hard accleration really, tick over is a bit hit and miss, sometimes it will sit nice and level at about 800rpm then 2 minutes later its struggling to keep running at 500rpm until I "blip" the throttle where upon it settles back down.

My car has the twin choke solex carb which has a new jet fitted a couple of years ago at BL autos (amonst £1200 worth of work),

I wonder then if it's maybe carburetor flooding caused by bad floats or sticky needle valve on the petrol inlet.

My CX was suffering from this after I fitted an electric petrol pump without a regulator.
