help bx 1600 estate

help my son,s 1600 bx estate 1993 started to misfire this morning there is matting coming out of the exhaust and the down pipe from the engine is glowing red hot any ideas please :cry:

That sounds like the back box has disintegrated inside & it looks like wool coming out of it. The car will also feel really down on power. I presume the down pipe is overheating as the rear box is in effect blocked, so theres no where for the heat to go....

Others with more technical knowledge may have a different idea on whats wrong?
