Rear subframes

Post by djoptix »

Are all rear subframes the same? I need to do the rear arm bearings on the 16v. It occurred to me that if I can find a good used subframe I can just swap it over and get the 16v one done at my leisure. I believe 16vs have a thicker ARB but is there any other difference?

If all is OK, does anyone have a spare subframe? :)

That sounds like an awful lot of work to me compared to the relatively easy task of doing the rear arm bearings. :?

If you can get hold of a spare set of arms (ABS ones are specific) then you can rebuild them at your leisure. Then you can simply swap the rebuilt arms over - that would make life easier.

There's a brand new rear sub frame in the list Roverman has on the for sale thread. It's expensive but they want to shift the parts so a negotiation might be possible

Thanks for the tip, will have a look. Ken, you're probably right if it weren't for the fact that I need to drop the subframe off anyway to do the hydro pipes (mine are all non-coated and are rusted to pieces!). Plus I was quoted £100 + vodka and tonic per side to do the bearings. Does this sound too much?

£100 plus sounds a bit expensive to me, mind you, I'm tight

The bearing kits are about £20-25 as far as I know, Yes dropping the subframe to change the pipes would make life a bit easier but I've never done that and I have re-piped several BX's now.

Assuming parts at £25 and labour at £30+vicious added tacks per hour, for two hours, I'd say that's a fairly good price.

Not a massively difficult DIY job, but you do need the right tools to do it, and if a bearing decides it's not coming out, you need to be a bit resourceful.

I agree. Decent price. Not taking the p*** at all.

£38.90 plus tax at GSF, so 100 quid is an excellent price.
