Rear Suspension T-Piece

Post by kiwi »

above the Rear Axle on the OS (drivers) is three clear return pipes two heading to the suspension arms and the third returning the fluid to the front of the car.

Joining them is a Black T-Piece! Well mines basically fell apart and needs replacing. Any idea what is called other than obvious T Piece? And anyone got an idea of a suitably replacement?

what about nylon 'T' pieces as used in windscreen washer systems or even fuel systems? Have you got an accessory shop where you can brouse?

Good idea! Well no accesory shop close by but will do a bit of an inquisition on my local mechanic. Actually may find something in the Old van parked at the bottom of the garden. Worth a look anyways.

I take it that the cut up remains of your old BX are long gone from the fire station to pillage?

that BX was chopped up last December so well gone! Still got the parts though just dont remeber salvaging that bit

These issues are with the latest addition to the family! As long as theres nothing beyond the Octopus, a small pin hole in the 1st Exhaust box and this problem should be good for at least another 6 months of road worthy before next WOF.

Meantime the Original beast after replacing the FDV its got another leak same area I cant track down!

I've experienced one of these falling to bits before - there should be a thread describing this in the dim distant past. You've got one overflow pipe for each rear strut boot feeding to it, and then the other is a long plastic return pipe leading to one of the rearmost "tentacles" of the octopus.

What seems like the obvious cut-price replacement - the t-piece above the lhm reservoir - is no good. Why? It's for smaller-diameter pipes. I seem to remember the return pipes here are 5.5mm ones (see last comment at end of this post). The original Citroen part is £20plus in the UK - which seems quite a lot for what it is.

Assuming you're baulking at the price, what you need is any lhm-tight t-piece that'll do the job. The owner of the BX in question likes good old-fashioned plumbing so we used a metal T-piece which incorporated metal olives pinched over the plastic pipe ends to help make a decent seal.

While it's low pressure (strut air pressure compensated for by air vents in strut boots) and there shouldn't be too much flowback unless the rear struts are on their last legs, lhm can be really good at defeating seals, so for MOT-test purposes it's a good idea to get this one absolutely lhm-tight, unless you fancy arguing the toss with a tester.

Had to drop the rear subframe a tiny bit on the t-piece side for access - made the job a lot easier. By the way, the old Japanese BX DIY site had a beautiful diagram of the return pipery including the diameters of pipes - can provide it via email if you PM.

Got told the bit is nz$24 which is a tenner to you so thats cheaper for a change???

Going to rig something up as like you said its not that bad a thing to drip.

Would you also believe parts out of stock and needs to be ordered from France but at $24 think will pay that less hassle.

Glad to hear it's cheaper in NZ - guess it's always worth trying.

Return pipe page with diagram that I referred on archive of Japanese BX site indicated by ellevie in another post - http://www.mars.dti.ne.jp/~ynar/bxorg_a ... 5/m15.html
