Accumulator replacement

Post by kiwi »

The BX19TZ that rebuilt and replaced the FDV on is still leaking LHM on the floor. All joints and unions dry no logical place I could see where coming from until today.

On dismantling the V shaped bracket of the spare one in the shed, I think located the source of the leak so time to ask the question.

Is there a seal at the end of the accumulator than can and does leak? Is it a replacable seal? And finally to get the thing out do I need to remove the damn radiator again and FDV?

Hi Kiwi, I think the only place where the accumulator can leak is where it's screwed into the pressure regulator. There's an O - ring seal just like the suspension spheres. It's not known to be prone to leaking but if it's old I guess it's possible.

Removal is just a strap wrench around the sphere (or a long chisel if it's stubborn) and unwind it. Beware of rusty pipes nearby! as I found out recently a pipe near the sphere broke when I removed the sphere..

The other possible place for leaks around there is on the pressure reg. valve itself - the return pipe goes from the PRV to the FDV but theres a small rubber return pipe that joins onto the PRV beside the main return pipe. It's just a leakage return but it could ooze LHM as it's in quite a vulnerable spot.

The PRV can also leak from the stopper at the end but it's very unlikely since it's never disturbed. When I removed one on the CX some time ago to reset the regulator I was conscious of the likelihood of it leaking after being disturbed for the first time in 31 years! but it was OK.

Thanks Aero, yea I checked throughly before making the assumption. Cleaned the thing until it was sparkling but that leak is quite obvious from the end of the PRV hence my other question in the original post.

Basically the unlikely IS happening. This cars done 180k and is 17 years old well maintained (not that means anything) didnt pick it up before because of the FDV leakage.
