XUD wants to run 24/7............

Post by ed4ferrets »

Guessing this is a fuel cutoff valve problem, switch off ingnition and engine continues purring without missing a beat :?

Seem to recall reading sometime ago that a temporary solution is a sharp rap with the handle of a screwdriver or some such?

May have to borrow Doc's BEEEG hammer

Never really looked at the BX but I had a similar prob with an old Passat I once had and all I did was pull the wire off that went to the solenoid....job done. Don't know if its the same set up on the BX...hope someone can give you the definitive answer.

It's never worked for me (hitting the thing) but I've had the same problem. I had to stall it to make it stop. There are different solenoids for the Bosch vs Cav pump.

When you remove the old one, watch out for the plunger and spring. Not that you need them as you'll have new ones but make sure you get em out. I 'think' there should also be an o-ring to replace which should come with the new solenoid.

All pups have an emergency stop lever just for occasions like this:

On the Lucas/RotoDiese/CAV it's on the fast-idle lever appearing as a raised tab. below it will be an arrow and the word "STOP" Push this tab toward the cambelt and the desired effect will happen. Effectively, the lever just lowers the idle speed tto near zero and the engine stops.

On the Bosch, the Emergency Stop lever is on the front face of the pump (as you look at it, peering under the bonnet) and apepars as a vertical lever. Push it and the engine will stop. Off-hand, I'm not sure which way but if you push it one way with no effect, try the other.

It's not a bad idea to familiarise yourself with the emergency stop lever before you find you might need it in anger.

I'll pop up some photos of the two levers when I get home if that'll help.

This is the Lucas Emergency Stop lever. Push it in the direction of the arrow away from the idle speed adjuster screw head.

This is the Lucas with the lever operated to the Stop position.

And this is the Bosch. Push it in the direction of the big arrow.

I assume the solenoid has no serviceable parts, replacement needed

Unfortunately, the only bit you (probably) need is the tiny little rubber seal that goes on the end of the solenoid plunger. Value: approx 10p. The only bit you can buy is the entire solenoid. Cost: Lots more.
this might be a signature

Hmm, guess I'll be stalling the motor well into the new year then (tightens belt another notch) unless some kind soul has a fubar Lucas pump with a good solenoid lying around in a dark corner somewhere

I just might have :D Yesterday I acquired a Lucas pump that has been destroyed running on veg

If the stop solenoid is OK on it, it's yours....

Try and do what citrojim suggested Ed and use the stop levers. Stalling isn't the best method. Forgetful idiot that I am it didn't even cross my mind to use them! I can send you a stop solenoid exactly like yours if you like - but your engine will still run 24/7! :P

Good Point BXB! Ed, you may well find the stop lever is pretty well seized up or very stiff from lack of use. Spray just a tad of WD40 around it and with the engine stopped, work and exercise it a bit to get it moving nice and free.

It's in bad weather that I'm reluctant to raise the bonnet and fiddle in the dark :( .

Much obliged Jim, please advise condition of the solenoid Jim, so we can arrange something re mail or pickup.

How does veg oil destroy pumps, is it due to higher viscosity?
