mikesg, the stop solenoid can go regardless of fuel, infact does it even come in contact? The one on my tzd went, garage found a replacement, easily sorted. I have noticed that they are rather expensive, i paid less than that & had it fitted as well, i think it cost me £20 all in....

I have to say that I too find there to be something somewhat magical about diesel, for me something which disappeared when the wonderful mechanical injector pump was usurped by the dull and tempramental electronic control. There is something wonderfully satisfying about driving behind a good old pump, and the driving characteristics of an old diesel are sublime.
citrojim wrote:Bearings are a bit tricky to replace Jonathan. The Lucas is a bit tricky to pull to bits, a little harder than the Bosch, and a special tool is needed to extract the cam ring peg as shown in the picture below.
Perhaps then I shall view the foray into this particular pump as more of a fact finding tour than a repair job!

I have been known to run diesel's on various substances, but having seen the havoc that this can wreak, I think I shall avoid subjecting the BX to this!

As I've said before, XUD's, or more appropriatley Lucas and Bosch pumps were designed to run with diesel in them, nowt else.
I shall never put anything other than real dino derv in my car, at least until fossil fuel runs out, and then I'll whap a pump on it that uses engine oil for lube.
(EDIT: actually, if there's no crude oil, there wont be any engine oil either.... bummer)

I wan't always a dieselhead, infact I hated them until dad bought the BX. I then realised just how amazing diesel cars could be.

Althoguh I have always loved big diesels, there's just nothing on earth that sounds as good as a Paxman Valenta engine with Napier turbine spooling up, it's just the soundtrack to sex.

Although my current fave diesel engine is this:

A Cummins 6CT-211. 8.3 litres of turbo charged diesel sex.
Infact I'm nursing a semi just looking at it.

The Cummins L10 REALLY makes me go all carnal!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Doc, it's gorgeous :D And I thought it was just me...

Speaking of a Napier, it's the Deltic that has the same efffect on me as the Cummins does with you.

Back when I was an apprentice I was shown a Deltic being used as a standby generator in a BBC Word Service Transmitting Station. They fired it up for us :D :D

It gave me more than a semi, I can tell you....

Ohhhh, the Deltic, that really is a bloody stiring sex machine of an engine.
I trust you've seen the various clips on you tube, including the Deltic being started up! Humnah humnah humnah!

hhmm..... dont tempt me!
Although the weight issue could be a negative factor, given that weighs as much as a BX....

I'd be impressed if someone could design a stop solenoid that didn't come into contact with the fuel it isolates.

Irritatingly, the only part that matters as far as the fuel is concerned is the tiny rubber seal on the end of the solenoid slug, but you can't buy just that bit, you have to buy the entire unit.

Not knowing too much about how a pump works, i didnt realise thats how a stop solenoid worked. Is it in effect like a plunger? so when its activated it stops the flow of fuel?

Thats the idea Mulley.
Although going back to the Gardenr engine, and indeed the cummins as pictured above, the stop solonoid actually operates on a lever that pushes against the rack, which closes each port off and stops the engine, so they dont come into contact with the fuel!

So does that technically make it an electromagnetic stop actuator rather than a fuel stop solenoid? </pedant>

Talking of alternative engines, I'm trying to get hold of a lister CS diesel engine. Lovely unit that they are. Single cylinder, 650rpm (that's flat out!) and a very soft relaxing sound they make. About as ideal for a BX as the Gardner engine Doc mentioned, but for very different reasons!
