Glowplugs on a TZD
The green hornet takes over 10 seconds when starting from cold and missfires a bit and chucks a bit of smoke out, its much better when warm but still takes alot longer than I remember. Is it like replacing spark plugs and how much should set cost?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....
chances are tim that the awkward one behind the pump has never been changed, a simple test is to disconnect the interconnecting wire between the plugs and then get a lenght of heavy duty cable put one end on the posative terminal and then brush the other end over the top of each plug if you get plenty of sparks chances are the plug is good, its not an exact science but does give you an idea.
Dont buy cheap glowplugs they dont last ,the last set i bought was just over £20.

The right tools include a good cranked 12mm ring spanner, a good 8mm ring spanner and a big lump of Blu-Tak.
With these, as Robin says, a doddle, relatively.
Forget the ratchet glowplug spanner some tool places try to peddle. They're rubbish.
A piece of rag stuffed down behind the injection pump is a good idea as it stops No.4 glowplug making a dash for the warm and cosy space twixt injection pump cradle and the block. The times I've found old glowplugs hiding down there
The utility of the Blu-Tak is obvious; it'll stop you loosing your nuts.
Glowplugs between Turbos and Non-Turbos are different and not interchangable.
Turbo plugs are BERU GN909 whereas the BERU GV636 is for non-turbos only. Use them in a turbo with post-heating and they last about 2 days... You can use turbo plugs in a non-turbo with no worries.
I say this as a certain spares emporium we all know and love don't always appreciate the difference.

True on the later 1905 TD cars, but the 1769 TD fitted to the BX never had post-heating, although some advocate using the GV636 plugs anyway to try to gain longer life.citrojim wrote: Glowplugs between Turbos and Non-Turbos are different and not interchangable.

You know Jim, it's high time you got yourself a BX, just so as to aquaint yourself with these little subtleties

To do what? 10 seconds of glowplugs, or 10 seconds of cranking?Roverman wrote:The green hornet takes over 10 seconds when starting from cold

Either that Johnathan or just confine my ramblings to non-BX areas of this fair forum or simply speak in generalities.jonathan_dyane wrote: You know Jim, it's high time you got yourself a BX, just so as to aquaint yourself with these little subtleties
I ran ito the GV636 incompatibility problem in my 2.1TD. That one post-heats for ever, or so it seems and wrecked a set of GV636s in very short order After two days, their resistance still looked about right but they would not glow when connected across a battery.
Alas, the aquisition of a BX is out of the question in the foreseeable as I already have a full and possibly expanding stable of Xants.

I'm regularly very tempted to be honest. Something like the Green Hornet is even more tempting for me. The thought has crossed my mind many times to send on one my Xants and replace it with a BX...jonathan_dyane wrote: But I do think you *need* at least one BX tho...
