I can see both sides of this. The 17TD is a much more driveable engine, and the mid-range torque makes for more overtaking opportunities, and more relaxed cruising.

However. I really really like the 1.9D engine (especially in square-port guise) and I used to drive a square-port up and down the motorways from Southampton to Dundee on a very regular basis.

The main thing to be aware of in this case is if you modify the car from N/A to TD, will you then have insurance issues? Regardless of the fact that you've made it identical to a normal TD BX, it will still be registered as a modified N/A model, and hence may cost lots to insure.

Also, if it's working fine at the moment, LEAVE IT ALONE! You'll only break it!

I regularly think it would be a great idea to heave the 75hp/90lbft 2.5D engine out of my panel van, and fit a 92hp/149lbft 1.9TD engine to it. It would go faster, be lighter, have better fuel economy, be quieter, have more space in the engine bay etc.etc.etc. BUT, the 2.5D engine in it at the moment works just fine, so it's staying put.

Hm, about the insurance - silly thing is that if I change my engine with 1,7TD I will pay less  You see, the morons who make the laws here thought that it will be smarter to form the insurance price based on the volume of the engine, not his power... The result is that I pay more having a 1,9 cc engine (but only about 70bhp) compared to... let's say 1,4 cc Honda Civic with about 140bhp (I'm making that up, just for the idea). So that's just one more motive for changing the engine
