Help! My 4x4 is now a 0x4

Post by Brian King »

A clattering noise and absence of forward motion has heralded a spline making a bid for early retirement on my otherwise very good 4x4. This means the engine out and either a replacement gearbox or get a specialist to mend the existing gearbox with its useless spline. The problem with replacement gearboxes is either that they don't exist, or if they do they might be about to suffer exactly the same problem. I eagerly await any advice/offers/contacts, apart from 'you poor sod, same happened to me on the A303. It went to a scrapper'

As a stopgap you could always throw in a common-or-garden 2wd gearbox to get back on the road, while you look for a far less fragile 405 Mi16 drive train?

Change to a fwd box, then use the rear driveline for an electric hybrid conversion? Expensive, & lots of work though. Good luck with fixing it.

I believe the 405 Mi16 drivetrain is of a different variety. Don't think they're interchangable, although I could well be wrong.

Otherwise, tricky one. Breaking it for spares won't return much cash as there aren't many 4x4's around. Interior and everything are just standard BX items, as with the engine. Rear bumper is the only unique thing, so that along with the exhaust would probably be the only parts worth selling.

If it's really straight and you have time/money/patience, I'd just keep it and wait for a cheap one to appear on the bay or CCC. It does happen from time to time. It's a ticking time bomb really, but then it's an inexpensive way of fixing it.

Or just go the whole fabrication/proper fix route. Costly, but if you love the car enough that won't matter, it'll always be good after that. Thing is, if memory serves you have a TZD and the valver too, which begs the question, do you prefer it to those? Cos if you don't, it's kinda pointless spending money on it.

The Mi box will almost bolt straight in and mate up with the rest of it without too much arsing around, but it aint a straight swop.

That said, if you're able enough to get the box out and strip the mofo down then the silly poxy shaft of doom would be nice and easy for any half decent machine shop to fix, or better still have one made that isn't wank.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Send me a PM, and I will put you in contact with a friend of mine who could sell you a complete 4x4 Bx, for reasonable money. Its my experience that if your going the s/h route then these components are best sourced from an estate version as the engine is slightly lower power than the hatchback version.

In addition to the spline problem between the gearbox and tranfer box, the propshaft support bearing is another weak point as the rubber bonding between the bearing and housing is prone to failure.
