Not wishing to sound stupid but I take it one kit does one side, ie you need two per car at £38.90 each +VAT etc.

I've often wondered (OK not often, but once or twice! ) is it best to do both at the same time, rather than do the most worn?

Hard to say Phil but if one is in need then you 'may as well' do the other. You can buy just the bearings which I think are about £8 for a pair + VAT (can't remember where I've seen them) I've been wondering if the taper needle roller bearings can be replaced using a sealed caged ball bearing .

Hi bearings well the advantage of taper roller bearings are that they can be adjusted easily (shims) to allow for 'manufacturing tolerances' and to set up the pre-loads. They also designed to cope well with the sideways thrust put on the arms with cornering etc.
Ordinary ball bearings are designed to cope with radial thrust but not axial thrust. Ok there are special ball races made to cope But they are non-adjustable and require accurately machined housings and spacers etc. and would be much more expensive to use in the BX aplication.
Taper rollers do the job.
Cheers.

I don't know if it's of any help but I tend to replace only the actual bearing shells and tracks for the arms - they're about £8 each from Euro car parts and you need 4. You re use the thrust washers, polished support tubes, 24mm nut and bolt and the rubber seals.

Is the kit you're talking about the one that replaces all of the components in one go?

It I'm mot treading on any toes - this is the kit for the whole lot. Whether you need to use the whole lot depends on the job in hand - which boils down to how well the previous owners have looked after the car. The inner plastic tube in the kit - which some regard as optional - is very likely to be damaged during removal of the old bearings.

Rear arm bearings that've been left too long may be candidates for extra parts replacement (where there's been corrosion or breakup inside - though not too severe).
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Thanks Bexy and DLM. The part numbers cross reference with a Quinten Hazel number QWB9000 for a kit. They arrived this morning and are now fitted to my estate. The drivers side was really really bad!!
