Accumulator?

Post by Boxwolf »

Anyone know the best place to find a new accumulator sphere for low price or have a surplus one to sell?

My pump tick rate is appalling, although thats somewhat to do with having old LHM i'm pretty sure replacing the accumulator will help things.

I tried Ebay and that got me an accumulator that was listed as new but turned out to have been used. I started a thread about it in BX chat.

How much are they from GSF? there seems to be a branch within driving distance so I might go there.

You'll pay p&p of that price to Ebay on top of what you pay for the sphere. Spheres off Ebay don't work out cheap and you can never be certain of the quality from sellers other than legit traders such as AEP etc.

Its EXACTLY the same part !
Accumalotor Spheres do not have a valve fitted to the threaded end and the pressure for the BX/XM/Xantia are all the same 62 bar and therefore will fit all models !
Also for a quick check to see if the diagram has collapsed or not if a very thin screwdriver or a bit of thin welding rod can pass thro' the orifice at the bottom of the threaded internal chamber into the sphere you know that the sphere is completely knackered and will have zero pressure and therefore is useless even for re-pressurizing, as there is a very likely chance that the internal diagram has been ruptured.

the 8 ponud sphere from eurocar parts would almost certainly be a factory re/con/ unit, with the price of brand new ones such as AMTEC it's not worth paying out for something which may not last very long (re/con sphere's), as the blader/diaphragm's dont last for ever and are not renewed in re/con sphere's, unless you are lucky enough to own a DS which the sphere body unscrews,

I stand corrected then as I was under the impression the xantia/xm accu was bigger and held pressure for longer!

It's the front center sphere on an XM you are thinking of...

Would it be worth getting a front center XM sphere instead? or is that more expensive?

No. Buy a standard accumulator sphere from a reputable supplier. That's what you need to do for peace of mind.

GSF and Eurocarparts, can supply overnight if you ring an order in to the branch with the parts number from their online shop.

AEP and others may take longer.

The price you pay is your own choice - but "standard" spheres from all the above should be of uniformly good quality, and £20 or thereabouts.

Though I've used one before on short-term cars, or as an emergency spare, the cheaper Eurocarparts accumulators remain an unknown quantity in some eyes until or unless we can identify them further. I'll post up the details in the tech section and see if anyone can identify them. Cheaper is nearly always cheaper for a reason.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

I went to GSF in reading today and purchased a new accumulator. Only problem now is fitting it. I want to do it myself and I now have a nice pair of axle stands but I havent a clue where to place them on each side.
