aircon system from 1990 bx 16v

Post by rob-bx16v »

:? Whats a complete aircon system minus the condesor rad taken from a 1990 bx 16v worth? i also have a binbag full of most of the wiring loom taken from the same car. May consider selling if its worth it.

Probably not much without a condensor and no guarantee that the rest of the kit would still work after being stored.
How much do you call if its worth it ?

not worth more than about £5, you'd need to be some sort of AC development engineer to be able to make the spare parts/connectors/adapters you would need to convert the system to R134, or if your feeling clever r1234yf.

I'd pay a fiver for the bits, I may be in need of a control unit. I'd have to agree with Jaba and Vanny though, once you open an A/C system to the air it'll start to deteriorate so for anyone wanting to do a retrofit best go for a sealed system actually on the car.
It's a fair amount of work to take it all out, how long did it take you?

I've got an aircon rad, plus various other components like what i understand is a special belt tensioner, compressor, pipes, mounting brackets, facia panel and all sorts of other stuff.

Its not complete though hence i've never fitted it. I know for sure the re-circ thingymajig that sits in the scuttle is missing along with the twin blower unit. It could be available to somebody if they have the inclination. I know i'll never fit it to one of my cars.

The system Rob offers along with bits I have would possibly make a complete system for some very clever individual.

The best of British luck to the buyer, if the sale goes through. My experience of BX aircon involves little other than running a car with it, though I did help on removing that system from the donor car for the original transplant, as the donor car was my daily driver at the time.

I'd suggest any retrofitter of BX airocn should look carefully at David Rutherford's recent postings on what can happen with an aircon installation incorporating belt tensioners. Best to avoid this particular arrangement if at all practicable, IMHO.

Yes, quite a big job to fit a whole system. Works very well when working properly though. In the UK You could get away without cutting the scuttle for the recirculation function if the car doesn't have removable blanking plates, as it doesn't really get so hot as to absolutely need the recirc.

There is another reason for the recirculation - to ensure that only dried air is passed through the evaporator, which could (apparently) ice up if the air is moist. That said, I've never had a problem with taking in the air from the outside on mine, even in Wales!

Its a relatively simple design unit with an evaporator alignment which is not idea for driaing of moisture, so water spray and iceing is very likely! Also recirc (especially the system found on the BX) gives a huge performance boost. Assuming your going to be removing the dash to fit the unit, then a couple of srokes with the grinder is well worth the effort, though i haven't seen too many higher spec models without the removable plates.

DLM can you point me in the direction of the thread?

It's here, Vanny. http://bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php ... ght=pulley

The thread title is self-explanatory. The aircon system in question was a retrofit I think, possibly from a 405 rather than a BX.
