If you are going to start spending money on this then a diesel injector repair specialist maybe able to exchange for a recon unit or even fish out the broken piece or drill it out for you & repair. Look up Bosch FIE specialist in the yellow pages.

Thanks for advice
Bx bandit - Looks like I'll have to do that.
Never mind the correct torque, would I definately be able to get them apart though?
sdelasal - will look into that in the morning

I managed to find a specialist who would put a new body on it for £25 but it would have to be sent in the post, so on the assumption that I can dismantle it, I think I should probably go for the 1.9 TD one on eBay for £10 including postage, as it should save time.
I will expect my stupid garage to deduct the cost of it from my repair bill, and I do worry that they'll inflate the bill to cover that cost, so less spent the better.

In order to take one apart you'll need a vice, a 34mm or 35mm socket and a breaker bar.
I didn't get chance to have a look for one of mine but I can try tomorrow and pop one in the post.

I have now bought that one on eBay - No idea what a breaker bar is, I'll have to hope that the garage has the tools to do it, if I can't.
I'll have to supervise them to make sure they actually do it, rather than just say they've done it (and without breaking another leak pipe!)

the car currently won't start - on Saturday they said it was air in the fuel supply and loosened connectors to the injectors until fuel came out, then tightened them, which worked. Some of the hoses to and from the leak pipes are now in poor condition, the broken injector has no leak pipes connected. is that liable to be responsible for it not starting? (it's always started before)

There are a number of worrying elements here. Firstly a mechanic who glues injectors in so that they cannot be removed. If he is working on your car, the current problem would appear to be due to incompetence. If the engine ran with the air purged but no longer does so, does it now turn over at all? (It can be that the new injector leaks liquid into the cylinder, hydraulically locking the engine, but I hope not.)
Has the air been purged with the priming pump? If not, you may have air in the fuel line.
Has the feed to the stop solenoid been checked? If the wire has dropped off, you can crank it until Hell freezes over but it will not start.

Why was the car in the garage in the first place?

Tom - I had a small amount of bubbling around one injector a year ago which this Mechanic mostly cured by applying some compound around it. When he tried to remove that injector, and couldn't, he used the Spanish word 'pegado' which means glued but probably also means stuck. So I'm not sure whether it was actually glue, but it certainly had the effect of glue!.
The engine does turn over, it just doesn't start. Remember that I haven't put the new injector in yet, all that's happened is that 3 of the injectors were removed and replaced in order to trace the cylinder that was affected by blown head gasket or cylinder block crack. With the pressure released on that cylinder, by removal of injector, (or heating plug in my case) I was able to treat with 'steel seal'. Now I've done that, I have no idea whether it worked or not because it won't start.
I've put the problem down to the fact that the leak-off hoses are either leaking or not connected, in the case of the broken injector, but I might be wrong. I can't really use the car with the intercooler disconnected, and diesel flying everywhere, so I guess I have to be patient and wait for this injector in the hope I'm able to dismantle it.
Is the priming pump the rugby ball shaped rubber thing on the fuel line?
As for the stop solenoid the only one mentioned in the workshop manual is shown in the diagram of the Bosch injection pump, and mine seems to be roto diesel but I will check the wiring that is there.
